Data Mining

We have developed and field-tested a unique approach to investigate water and sewer network called “Data Mining”. This innovative investigation consists of using existing data collected by municipalities and agencies to assess underground networks at a fraction of the cost of other evaluation system available. These investigations are performed using the data management tool we have developed.

The tool integrates data time series collected by different agencies such as meter recordings from the water distribution and sewer collection systems into a single digital database, which becomes an important source of information. A correlation between the different recordings transforms these data time series into performance indicators. The data management tool can diagnose or determine:

  • Water System Leakage Rate
  • Sewer Infiltration and Inflow (I/I)
  • Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO)
  • Network condition of each basin
  • Demand patterns and distribution
  • Cost associated with network deficiencies.
  • Return on investment
  • The data management tool groups together meter recordings to determine demands by sectors, which can be used to analyze the systems or be uploaded into models for better calibration and simulation results.

This method has the advantage of showing actual system behavior at a fraction of the price of regular data acquisition systems or intrusive investigations.
